How to Clean an Empty Pool With Algae

April 11, 2023

If your pool remains uncleaned for extended periods of time, algae can take residence there. This is especially true if the local climate has been hot and humid recently.

Start by draining the pool as thoroughly as possible using either a water hose or vacuum. Doing this will ensure that you remove all debris and prevent clogs in your filter system.

Next, fill a watering can with liquid chlorine and some water. Pour the mixture over the sides and bottom of your pool.

If your pool has an extensive algae issue, you may need to repeat this process several times. After each chlorine wash, use a pool brush to scrub away any remaining particles of algae and dirt.

Before adding any new chemicals, lower your pH level to 7.2 or 7.0 in order to prevent algae growth in the future. This will help ensure a healthy environment for aquatic life.

Algae thrives off of high pH levels, and chlorine isn't as effective when your pH falls too far. To lower your pH balance, use sodium bisulfate as directed on the label and follow all instructions for use.

Once the pH has been reduced, add 2 to 4 pounds of granular or chlorine shock. This will give your pool water a milky blue hue and eliminate any remaining algae. Afterward, continue filtering daily, backwashing as necessary.
