How to Remove Wallpaper

how to remove wallpaper

Wallpaper can be difficult to remove, but with patience and the appropriate tools you can safely take down this outdated wall covering. Your particular situation depends heavily on factors like its type, adhesive used to mount it, and personal preferences when it comes to how you'll attack this task.

Removing Wallpaper From Hard-to-Reach Places

Textured wallpaper may be attached to walls using adhesive that's hard to peel away, making removal difficult. A chemical stripper or spray solution may help loosen this bond so you can use a putty knife, paint scraper or paper stripper tool for removal.

Remove Stubborn, Old Wallpaper

A combination of hot water mixed with fabric softener or vinegar may help break down stubborn wallpaper. Apply it using a spray bottle along the wallpaper border, and leave for 20-30 minutes before wiping away with a damp sponge.

HGTV suggests spraying small, workable sections at a time with the solution and leaving it for several minutes before peeling away at it, until all borders of wallpaper have been taken down.

Steamers can also help soften wallpaper adhesive, which may help you remove hard-to-remove wallpaper more efficiently. Be sure to turn off power in the room first and cover any outlets with painter's tape to prevent water damage while doing this task.
