how to install a sprinkler system

Before you dive in with digging holes and laying pipes for your sprinkler system, take some time to learn how to install it correctly. While this project will involve some physical labor, it typically won't require more than a weekend's effort.

Step 1: Check for Stop Valves and Drains

Before burying pipes underground, it's essential that all necessary parts are in place. Be sure to have the appropriate stop valves and drains to avoid mixing house water with outside sources - especially during the winter when too much moisture could soak into your lawn and cause issues with drainage.

Step 2: Measure Water pressure

An easy way to assess the flow rate in your home's plumbing is to attach a pressure gauge directly to its hose bib or use a 5-gallon bucket as an accurate way of measuring how much water your system delivers in one minute.

If your water pressure falls below 30 psi, it may not be adequate to run sprinkler heads efficiently; seeking professional advice would be recommended in such an instance. Once established, work with a sprinkler manufacturer to find an irrigation map that shows where and how many sprinkler heads will be installed as well as which pipes and valves will complete your system - this will make installation more efficient while assuring that only appropriate heads are installed in different zones of your yard.
