Caleb Johnson Studio/Woodhull is an architecture, construction and millwork firm headquartered in Portland, Maine. Led by founder and CEO Caleb Johnson, this business has been built upon a philosophy that puts people first and promotes design-led construction techniques.
His commitment to his clients' homes is evident in the homes he creates. With the assistance of his team, he's been able to consistently produce homes of exceptional quality, built using real core-construction materials.
Caleb and his team have been recognized for their design accomplishments by national architecture and building organizations and publications. Additionally, Caleb has been recognized for creating a culture at the company that prioritizes its employees--about 30 people--first.
Established in 2003 by Caleb Johnson and renowned photographer Trent Bell in Biddeford, Maine, Caleb Johnson Studio (formerly Johnson Bell) has evolved into an award-winning architecture, construction and millwork firm known as Woodhull of Maine. Now employing over 70 architects, designers, cabinetmakers, support staff members, project managers/superintendents/estimates/carpenters they continue to innovate within these disciplines.
Woodhull's architecture, construction, and millwork teams work in concert throughout the course of a project; they engage clients early and frequently to ensure high-quality design and craftsmanship that clients and communities appreciate. This teamwork is the driving force behind their success.
One of their most impressive projects is Pieri Pines House, a timber-clad family home in Otisfield, Maine. Commissioned by three brothers, this two-storey dwelling pays homage to traditional Maine camp vernacular while offering families a simple yet functional refuge.
To foster familial ties, the architects chose not to include a primary bedroom but instead designed spaces that could be shared. A central access point links the main living space and kitchen together, leading out onto a deck that wraps around an impressive glacial boulder atop the site. The second floor cantilevers over this boulder so that residents can take in breathtaking views from its top level.
This home is constructed with local Eastern white cedar and stained to replicate the texture of nearby stones and trees. This approach underscores the company's dedication to using high-quality materials while respecting both their team members and environment.
