Introduction

When it comes to plumbing materials, there are countless options to choose from. However, two popular options are PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride). PEX is flexible and easy to install, while PVC is a rigid material often used for drainage systems. But what happens when you need to connect the two? In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to connect PEX to PVC.

Step 1: Gather Materials

Before beginning any plumbing project, it is important to have all the necessary materials. For this project, you will need the following:

  • PEX tubing
  • PVC pipe
  • Female PVC fitting
  • PEX crimp ring
  • PEX crimp tool
  • PEX-to-PVC transition cement

Step 2: Prepare the PVC Pipe

The first step is to prepare the PVC pipe. Measure and cut the pipe to the desired length. Use sandpaper or a PVC cutter to smooth the edges and remove any rough areas. Once the pipe is prepared, apply PVC primer to the outside of the pipe and the inside of the female PVC fitting. Allow the primer to dry according to manufacturer instructions.

Step 3: Apply Cement to the PVC Fitting

Once the primer is dry, apply PEX-to-PVC transition cement to the inside of the female PVC fitting. Apply a generous amount of cement to ensure a secure connection.

Step 4: Insert PEX Crimp Ring onto PEX Tubing

While the cement is setting, insert a PEX crimp ring onto the PEX tubing. The crimp ring should be placed at the point where the tubing will connect to the PVC fitting.

Step 5: Insert PEX Tubing into PVC Fitting

Once the cement is ready, insert the prepared PEX tubing into the female PVC fitting. Push the tubing into the fitting as far as it will go. Be sure to align the crimp ring with the fitting.

Step 6: Use PEX Crimp Tool to Secure Connection

Using the PEX crimp tool, crimp the PEX crimp ring onto the PEX tubing. The tool should be placed over the crimp ring and squeezed until it is tight. Be sure to follow the manufacturer instructions for the tool to ensure a secure connection.

Step 7: Let It Set

Once the crimp ring is secured, allow the connection to set. Follow the manufacturer instructions for the transition cement and crimp ring to determine how long the connection needs to set before use.

Conclusion

Connecting PEX to PVC can seem daunting, but with the right tools and materials, it can be done easily. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can connect PEX to PVC and ensure a secure and long-lasting connection. Remember to always follow manufacturer instructions and take safety precautions when working with plumbing materials.
