How to Build a Deck Gate

Deck gates are a cost-effective and practical way to add extra security and privacy to your outdoor area. Deck gates can be made from pressure-treated pine, cedar, redwood or other rot resistant lumber found at most building supply stores.

Stain or paint your gate to protect it from external elements. Additionally, polyurethane should be applied to any wood screws to prevent them from splitting. Although this task can be tedious, the effort is worth it in the end.

Make sure the gate's frame is square and won't sag over time. Use a framing square and level to assess this condition; if unsure, consult with a carpenter or home improvement professional for assistance.

Measure and mark the lengths of each frame piece necessary for your deck gate project. You'll need two horizontal pieces that span the full width (in this case, 41 inches) and two vertical pieces measuring 33 inches long. Once you have these measurements, use either a miter saw or circular saw to cut each frame piece to size.

Once all pieces of the frame have been cut, attach them together like a picture frame. For best results, drive screws across each grain for a strong connection. Use one 3-inch and one 5- or 6-inch deck screw at each corner of the frame.

Now you should be able to easily install your gate between the posts of your railing system. If you have assistance, have them hold it in position while you mark its hinges and secure them with bolts or screws.

For added safety, attach a self-latching gate clasp to the side opposite from the hinges of your gate. This will secure it shut and prevent it from opening outward over steps or staircases.

If your railing is metal, use a spray primer with rust inhibitors to protect it from rusting or deterioration. For extra protection, apply two coats of primer, waiting for the first to dry before applying the second.

Once your gates are installed, stain them to match your decking or paint them a color you like. Doing this will protect them from elements and maintain their aesthetic for years to come.

Add a finishing touch by creating a cap board to go over your gate. This will give your railing an improved aesthetic and also strengthen it for added strength.

Constructing this board requires a router and 1/4-inch roundover bit, but it's an achievable DIY project for most DIYers. You can do it either by hand or with a table saw.

You can purchase pre-made gates at your local hardware store, but these may be too narrow for your requirements. That is why it is essential to plan ahead and decide how wide a gate you require.

For a sturdy, visually pleasing and functional deck gate, consider building one from pressure-treated wood. This gives you complete control over the color and finish. If you're not an experienced carpenter, building a wooden gate with your own hands may prove more challenging than anticipated, but it is possible.
