Window hanging planters are an excellent way to bring color and texture into a room, as well as making it simple for you to maintain their health.

The best window boxes are constructed from durable materials that will last for years. They come in an assortment of shapes, styles and colors so you can find one to suit your style perfectly.

If you're partial to a traditional wooden window box but don't want to spend money on one, try creating your own out of pallet wood. Not only will this save you money on an item that everyone already owns, but the rustic yet timeless aesthetic it creates will add character and interest in any room.

Create the look of a wood window frame by using a twig and leaf design on the front. This will make it appear more organic, rather than like something you've DIY-ed.

Alternatively, you can craft one out of old wood and paint it to match the colors in your home. This will add character and give you the option to customize further with different finishes.

Another option for a rustic window planter is to use fence planks or similar material cut into long shapes. This will give your potter an organic, handmade appearance that's sure to impress guests.

To get started, measure the window frame where you plan to hang your planter and mark where brackets must go. Drill holes in those marked spots and attach the brackets with screws for extra support.

Once the brackets are in place, center your window planter box on them. Be sure to position it slightly angled so water can drain away from the box and not rub against your windows.

Window planters that can hold a variety of soil and plants but still have drainage holes so excess water doesn't seep through and cause root rot are ideal. You should choose low-maintenance plants like cacti or succulents which don't need much watering and can survive even in low light conditions.

Indoor plants require extra attention due to the lack of sun exposure and cold temperatures, making them vulnerable. Therefore, only hang window boxes in spring or summer when temperatures are warm enough for them to thrive.

Finally, opt for hanging plants that aren't cold-sensitive. This will guarantee your plant remains healthy even during cooler weather.

Sweet potato vines make excellent indoor window planters due to their vibrant look and interesting colors. Furthermore, this plant adds an interesting textural element with its intricate foliage and flowers that look just as stunning indoors as outdoors. You can plant this indoors in a window box, hanging basket or even on the ceiling - no matter where it goes, it will look just as lovely inside as outside!
