How to Make Floating Shelves: A Step-by-Step Guide

December 1, 2023

Choose Your Materials

When making floating shelves, the first step is to gather your materials. This includes the wood for the shelves, as well as the hardware needed to mount them. For the shelves themselves, you’ll want to choose a sturdy, attractive wood that will complement your existing décor. Popular choices include oak, pine, or walnut. For the hardware, be sure to select sturdy brackets that can support the weight of the shelves and the items you plan to display on them.

Measure and Cut Your Shelves

Once you have your materials, the next step is to measure and cut your shelves to the desired size. Use a tape measure and a pencil to mark the length you want for each shelf, and then use a saw to carefully cut along the marked lines. It’s crucial to measure accurately and cut precisely to ensure that your shelves fit and look professional.

Position the Brackets

With your shelves cut to size, the next step is to position the brackets that will support them. Hold the shelf against the wall and use a pencil to mark the placement of the brackets on the wall. Be sure to use a level to ensure that the brackets will be straight and evenly positioned.

Install the Brackets

Once you have marked the placement of the brackets, you can install them using a drill and the appropriate screws for your wall type. Be sure to double-check that the brackets are level before fully tightening the screws. Once the brackets are in place, simply slide the shelves onto the brackets, and your floating shelves are ready to use!
