How to Seal a Driveway

Sealing your driveway will not only give it a fresher appearance, but more importantly will also protect and extend its lifespan. Sealing creates an effective shield from UV rays, moisture and corrosion-causing chemicals which otherwise damage its surface. Homeowners can tackle this task themselves and save themselves the cost of professional services - but before beginning, ensure the surface is in good condition before beginning this project.

Start by using a push broom to sweep away dirt and debris before using your garden hose or power washer to wash down the surface. Next, use a stiff-bristled brush with stiff bristles to scrub areas that contain stains such as oil, grime or gas residue stains; for oil-based stains use degreasing cleaner specifically designed for your type of driveway surface.

Make sure the weather will remain clear for at least three days prior to and following application of sealant, giving the surface enough time to dry between each coat. Late spring, summer or early fall are excellent choices as this reduces the possibility of rain washing away your newly applied sealant immediately after it has set.

Find an asphalt or concrete sealant that suits the condition of your driveway, and read through its manufacturer's directions carefully. Asphalt sealants have different formulas designed specifically to address newer or older driveways as well as conditions like light or heavy traffic; while other forms may simply need stirring instead.
