A bookshelf room divider is an effective way to maximize space in smaller rooms. Not only does it visually separate individual zones, but it also provides storage and often serves to showcase decorative objects.

If you live in a small apartment or condo, one room may need to serve multiple purposes. This could be an office/reading nook that doubles as dining room; whatever the case, Becky Martin, interior design leader at IKEA UK and Ireland recommends using a divider to visually separate each area from its surroundings.

Bookcases make ideal dividers due to their ease of construction and customizability to match any home style or decor. When using a shelf as part of this arrangement, be sure to select colors that blend in seamlessly with other furnishings and accents in your room.

White is an ideal color choice for this type of room divider, as it's neutral and will look good in any room of the home. But if you want your shelves to serve as a focal point in your space, Anna Tatsioni - lead designer at Decorilla - suggests opting for darker hues. This will add depth and texture to your space.

Shelves with a built-in back are great for dividing a large room, as they offer more privacy. You can install them on either side of a door or use them to physically separate bedrooms from kitchens, for instance.

You can also use a freestanding shelf to create an eye-catching divider. This is great for rooms that don't have much wall space and allows you to showcase decorative items, plants and photos.

Hanging dividers are an excellent solution for creating a divider in a small space, as they can be adjusted according to the needs of their owner. These can be constructed out of fabric, curtains or sheets and hung from rods or hooks to fit any area perfectly.

These types of dividers are perfect for dividing an open-plan kitchen and dining room from a living area, according to Becky Martin. Not only are they quick and inexpensive to construct, but they'll give each space its own identity while still providing space to store dishes and serveware, according to her advice.

Depending on the size of your shelves, you can place them at eye level or slightly higher. This will create visual separation from the adjacent room and less likely to block out light if not filled completely.

To avoid shelf clutter, opt for an open shelving system instead of a full-height bookcase. This will enable you to place lighter objects on upper shelves so they won't be as visible in the same area.
