As the construction industry continues to evolve, luxury home construction trends and designs are gaining popularity. These new designs are focused on sustainability, wellness and connection with nature.

Many empty-nesters are choosing to downsize their homes and opt for “jewel box” houses, which have a smaller footprint but feature luxurious amenities and finishes. This trend is being driven by changing demographics.

Wood

If you’re building a luxury home, wood can be an ideal way to give your design a more earthy and natural feel. Whether used for interior or exterior spaces, it adds a timeless touch that can be appreciated for years to come.

One of the newest trends in luxury home construction is the use of natural wood finishes and elements throughout the space, especially on the exterior. These materials can help clients achieve a warm and restorative aesthetic that is in harmony with their lifestyles, says Lizzy Antonik, lead designer at Oak Development & Design in Hingham, Massachusetts.

“Since we’re seeing a lot of people leaning towards natural, biophilic designs these days, I think it will continue to be a popular choice,” she says. For kitchens, she recommends using cedar or pine cabinets to achieve a rustic, knotty look that brings a more restorative element to the space.

On the outside, she likes using wood accents for fencing and gable fences to add more texture and a sense of place to the home. She also uses wood pavers on patio spaces to create a more natural feel.

Another trend that’s popping up in home design is patterned hardwood floors. These can be seen in kitchens and living rooms, as well as bedrooms and other private spaces.

Patterned flooring is a great way to add character and make rooms look more unique, say designers. These types of floors have been around for years, but are starting to become more popular again.

With so many options available, it’s easy for homeowners to choose a color that reflects their personal style. This can be a great way to make their home stand out from other houses on the market.

As homeowners move into a new home, they are looking for ways to make their space more functional and efficient. This means more storage solutions like closet systems and organizers built into cabinets and drawers.

Besides these, homeowners are also opting for extra-deep drawers in the kitchen, which can be handy for pots and pans. They are also favoring specialty storage, like open shelves in the kitchen’s center island or custom shelving in a bedroom, that cater to their specific needs.

Natural stone

Natural stone is a durable material used in many building construction projects. Its unique texture and unrepeatable beauty have made it a favorite for architects, interior designers, and product developers.

Several different types of stone are often used in luxury home construction, including granite and marble. These materials are long-lasting and easy to maintain, which makes them an ideal choice for luxury home builders.

In addition, they offer unique patterns and textures that can be combined to create custom designs for your home. This can be a great way to add character and design flair to your space.

Another way to use stone in your new luxury home is to clad your walls with it. European designers have been using this technique for decades, and experts predict that it will continue to grow in popularity in the United States as well.

The stone that you choose for cladding can be a major factor in how your luxury home looks and feels. It can make your walls stand out, or it can create a subtle textural effect that will give your home a timeless look.

Some of the most popular choices for cladding are limestone, granite, slate, and quartz. These stones have varying textures and colors, so you can achieve multiple aesthetics with them.

Slate is a dark, fine-grained natural stone that is formed when sedimentary rocks are subjected to high pressures. It is weather-resistant and frost-resistant, making it a versatile choice for both interior and exterior applications.

Similarly, granite is a hard-wearing natural stone that’s created from molten lava. Its crystalline formation and tectonic plates lifting during the cooling process give every piece of granite its own unique pattern.

It is also one of the hardest stones around, so it can be a good choice for luxury home construction that will be exposed to rough weather. Additionally, it’s stain-resistant and will not chip easily, so it’ll look pristine for years to come.

Finally, sandstone is a thin, dark-colored natural stone that’s composed of fine silicate grains. It’s a great option for indoor and outdoor applications because it’s low maintenance and doesn’t require sealing or protective coatings.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is a durable, low maintenance material that looks great and complements other materials. Whether you want a sleek kitchen countertop or an acoustical decking system, there are plenty of ways to incorporate stainless steel into your luxury home construction project.

Among the many benefits of stainless steel is its durability and resistance to corrosion. It can also be polished to a mirror-like shine, which helps it stand out against other materials in your home.

There are several stainless steel grades, and each has its own unique properties. You'll need to choose a grade that will withstand the temperatures, pH, stressors, and corrosion that you expect it to endure.

For example, if you plan on using stainless steel in an area with a high risk of corrosion, you'll want to use an austenitic stainless steel, such as type 304. This grade contains at least 16-18% chromium and 10-14% nickel with an added amount of molybdenum for better corrosion resistance.

Another popular stainless steel grade is type 316, which has 18% chromium and 14% nickel with an additional molybdenum. This alloy is used in chemical processing, the pulp and paper industry, food and beverage processing, and marine environments because it can withstand high temperatures and resist pitting.

When choosing stainless steel, you'll also need to consider its microstructure, or the way it forms. Depending on your needs, you may choose an austenitic (carbon-containing iron with a face-centered cubic structure) or ferritic (iron with a body-centered cubic structure) stainless steel.

Aside from its corrosion resistance, stainless steel is also a highly-versatile material that can be used for many different applications. It's often used in appliances, plumbing pipes, and storage tanks.

Stainless steel is also widely used for furniture. Architects and designers are finding that it pairs well with other materials, such as wood and natural stone.

In addition, stainless steel can be used to create custom finishes and add texture and interest to your home. Adding a few stainless steel accessories, such as handles and knobs, can give your space a modern feel without adding to its overall weight. Stainless steel can also be painted to match the rest of your home's color scheme.

Lighting

With the real estate market slowly resurging, luxury home construction trends and designs have come back to the forefront. This type of housing has a wide variety of amenities, such as large outdoor living spaces, spa-like master bathrooms, and extra storage.

Besides being comfortable and stylish, these homes also come with smart features that make life easier for homeowners. From automated front door locks to security systems that turn off lights in other housing areas if they detect motion, homeowners can enjoy more conveniences than ever before.

One of the most popular luxury home design trends is to incorporate a lot of natural light into a space. To do this, homeowners often choose large windows or glass doors. This not only allows for more sunlight to enter the room but also helps with ventilation.

Other lighting options include a chandelier over the dining area or a large pendant over the kitchen. These fixtures are a great way to brighten up any space and can be customized with unique bulbs or colors to fit your style.

Another popular trend is to use vintage-style lighting. This look can help bring a sense of history into a room.

Using a chandelier over the dining table or a pendant over the kitchen can also add elegance to your luxury home design. You can even pair these pieces with a modern piece of furniture to give your home a more eclectic and luxurious feel.

When designing a luxury home, it is important to make sure that the lighting scheme is well-balanced so that it illuminates the room without drawing your attention away from its function. This is especially true in a larger house where you can have more space to work with when it comes to lighting.

In addition to adding style and ambiance, these lighting options can also help your home be more energy efficient. Many of these lights are available with LED technology, which means that they don't require a lot of electricity to power them. This can save you money over the long term.
