The state of Colorado is home to many beautiful and unique attractions, and the city of Colorado Springs is no exception. One of the most popular tourist destinations in the city is the Botanical Gardens. The gardens are home to over 200 species of plants, as well as a variety of birds, butterflies, and other animals.
The gardens are open year-round, and visitors can take self-guided or guided tours. The gardens also offer a variety of educational programs for both adults and children. In addition to the plants and animals, the Botanical Gardens also feature a cafe and a gift shop.
The Botanical Gardens were founded in 1871 by Dr. David Hockensmith. Hockensmith was a botanist and an accomplished horticulturist. He came to Colorado Springs in search of a drier climate that would be better for his health. When he arrived, he was surprised to find such a diverse array of plant life.
Hockensmith began collecting specimens and soon had one of the largest private collections in the state. He decided to open his collection to the public so that everyone could enjoy it. The Botanical Gardens have been open to the public ever since.
The Botanical Gardens are now operated by the City of Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation Department. The gardens are open every day from 9am to 5pm. Admission is free for children under 3, and $9 for adults. Seniors, students, and military personnel can get in for $7.50. Annual memberships are also available for $50 per family or $35 for individuals.
