Top Architecture Firms of 2017

June 6, 2023

Gensler maintained its position at the top of the architectural firm rankings with revenue totaling 1.24 billion dollars, boasting clients such as government, gaming companies, science & tech firms and hospitals among their roster of clients.

Many architecture firms list their senior staff on their websites and the majority is male-dominated; only three out of 100 top firms have female leaders.

Taller KEN

Taller KEN is an architectural firm located in both New York City and Costa Rica that specializes in whimsical design with cultural relevance. Established by Gregory Melitonov and Ines Guzman, their firm strives to foster an inclusive studio culture, which draws upon early-career architects from diverse backgrounds from around the globe.

Projects undertaken by this team demonstrate a strong sense of place and an intent to animate public space through artistic means. For instance, Bright Stripes at Alloy Block in Brooklyn employs an engaging color-blocking strategy in order to promote public activation throughout the day in its street space.

As another example of their ability, their zebra-themed cafe in Guatemala exemplifies how the firm successfully marries architecture with fun. This project won a 2018 AIA League Prize recognizing designers ten years out from school who have shown excellence in their professional practice. Furthermore, Hija de Tigre Clothing Co in Costa Rica recently had their storefront renovated by this firm as well.

Fuksas & Associates

Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas operate their firm from offices in Rome, Paris, and Shenzhen. Their design services span product, interior, scenographic design as well as architecture that showcases innovative use of materials while creating spaces that are both practical and appealing. Their buildings have garnered much acclaim.

Foligno's Church of San Paolo Apostolo in Italy stands as an impressive testament to concrete as a medium for light. Architects designed its facade so that it resembles a cube with different cutouts that allow light into its core.

Fuksas has employed innovative cladding techniques to craft eye-catching structures for their clients, such as Rome's new congress center featuring cloud-shaped facades.

Sustainability was at the core of many of this year's Facades+ projects and speakers highlighted how advanced facades could help reduce energy costs - for instance, designers of Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport included features to maximize energy savings over its lifespan.
