When Your Thermostat Goes Above Set Temperature

February 19, 2023

If your thermostat is displaying the temperature in your home that is much higher than you set it to, there could be some problems. It is a common problem for many homeowners, and there are a few things you can do to fix it.

First, you need to understand the way thermostats work. All thermostats use a thermistor, which is an electrical resistor device that helps measure indoor temperatures. The thermistor can be broken or damaged, which means your thermostat cannot accurately read the temperature inside your house.

This is a common problem, but it is not a serious one and can be fixed quickly and easily. The easiest thing to do is simply switch the setting from "heat" to "cool." If that does not resolve the issue, it may be time for a professional to take a look.

In addition, you may need to replace the thermistor in your thermostat if it has been broken or is very old. This can be done by a HVAC professional, and it will ensure that your thermostat is functioning properly.

Another common reason that a thermostat is not reading the correct temperature is if it has been improperly calibrated. This can happen when a new thermostat is installed, or when you have an older unit. It is important to remember that all thermostats are calibrated before they are used in your home.

It is also a good idea to check your thermostat's wiring to make sure that it is installed correctly. If it is, you need to replace the wiring if it is too corroded or loose.

You can fix this by having the wires re-wired or you can have a new thermostat installed. You should have an electrician help you with this, as it can be a tricky process.

If you have an older model, it is recommended that you calibrate your thermostat every year. This can prevent your furnace from not reaching the set temperature and save you money on energy costs.

Sometimes a thermostat doesn't reach the set temperature because it is not getting enough power. This can be caused by a blown fuse or tripped breaker.

The best solution to this is to get a maintenance service visit from an HVAC technician. They will be able to examine all components of your system and find out what is wrong with your thermostat.

Once a technician has found out the root of your problem, you can schedule the necessary repair. You will need to pay an HVAC service professional for their services, but it is worth the expense.

Thermostats aim for a temperature that is 1-2+ degrees above what you have set on the thermostat. This is because it allows the heating unit to preserve the heat/cold for a longer period of time. This is usually not a problem but can be frustrating if you do not want your room to get too hot or cold.
