Instead, in 2009, the California Public Utilities Commission implemented an “overlay” solution by adding area code 442. This meant that instead of splitting the territory again, both 760 and 442 would share the same geographic region.
With this change came the requirement of 11-digit dialing (1 + area code + local number) for all calls within the region, a minor inconvenience but one that ensured sufficient phone numbers for years to come.
