HITEL is an exciting design hotel nestled in the vibrant cultural and creative district of Xiamen. Formerly a cigarette factory dating back to the 1980s, it has been renovated with budget-friendly flair and offers unique public spaces for activities that set it apart from other modern hotels.
Project Location: Xiamen, Fujian, China
The Huamei Cigarette Factory's reception center became the framework for HITEL, yet transforming it into a hotel presented an array of challenges. During initial survey though, we discovered large pipes throughout and felt as if taking part in some kind of science fiction movie from the 80s or 90s! To further enhance this surreal feeling while designing, we pondered how to bring out its otherworldly qualities; combining cylinders with cubes on the facade generated an unearthly atmosphere that set HITEL apart.
