Plants That Repel Flies

April 3, 2023

Flies can be a real issue for some people, especially when they spend more time outdoors enjoying the fresh air. Fortunately, there are ways you can deter flies from entering your home or yard.

One way to keep flies away from your yard is by growing plants that repel them. Here are some of the best choices:

Basil

A member of the mint family, basil is an effective fly-repellent plant. It's easy to grow, requires minimal upkeep, and emits a pleasant odour which bugs are likely to dislike.

Plantain can thrive in any climate, provided the soil doesn't become dry. Not only is it an excellent choice for any garden, but it can also thrive indoors with enough sunlight and proper care.

Mint

Peppermint is an ideal choice for creating a fly-repelling garden. It emits an unpleasant odour which pests find unpleasant, making it highly effective against mosquitoes as well. Unfortunately, peppermint grows rapidly so you may find that it spreads around your home or yard quickly.

Yarrow

A flower with an aroma similar to chrysanthemums, yarrow is an effective fly repellent with many uses. Not only does it ward off mosquitoes, beetles and other pests away, but it's especially great at keeping flies away from flower beds and gardens.

Yarrow's powerful fragrance can also be used to attract predatory wasps, which act as natural fly repellents. Not only does it add visual interest to flower beds, but you can plant it alongside tomato plants and other vegetables too to help prevent insect problems.

Rosemary

A perennial herb that repels insects, rosemary is easy to grow and makes an attractive addition to flower beds. It thrives in zones 4-10 with full sun conditions. Propagation can be accomplished from cuttings or by grafting; additionally, it does well in containers as well.

Catnip

Studies have shown that catnip, with its oil and soy pellets, is an effective repellant of stable flies in hot and cold climates. It can be grown anywhere from zone 3 to 9 but thrives best near porches or patios.

Tansy

Tansy flowers are not only stunningly beautiful, but they're also effective at repelling flies. Available in an array of colors, this flower makes a lovely addition to hanging baskets or containers that will sit outdoors on your porch or patio.

Marigold

Marigolds are vibrantly-colored flowers that add an eye-catching element to any landscape, as well as being known for their ability to repel flies. Plus, these easy-to-grow plants can be grown in containers or directly on the ground.

They require full sunlight and a moist soil, so make sure not to overpot them in a pot or container. Furthermore, they prefer plenty of water so don't neglect them!

Citronella

Citronella, a perennial fly-repellent, has an offensive smell that pests will find offensive. For best results, use citronella during fall or winter when flies are at their most active; however, you can move it around your house year-round to keep pests away.
