The Pros and Cons of Tandem Garages

February 3, 2023

If you're looking for a house with a garage, you might come across the term "tandem garage." It sounds strange and can be intimidating, but don't let it stop you! A tandem garage is actually a great way to save space in your home. It's especially useful if you have narrow property or if you need extra storage space.

A two car tandem garage is one where the cars are arranged side by side. This is usually the case for a newer construction, but it can also be retrofitted into an existing home. It's typically a good idea to consult with your local home inspector to determine whether a tandem garage is right for your needs.

It's a common misconception that a tandem garage will only fit one vehicle, but it can also fit up to three cars. In this case, the sides will be deeper than they are in a standard two car garage to give you room for the third car. This is a great solution for people with a large number of cars that need storage, workspace, or both!

These types of garages are not as popular as traditional garages. But they are still a good option for many homes that do not have enough space to accommodate a regular two car garage.

Tandem garages can increase the value of a home because they provide additional parking spaces that neighboring houses may not have. This can be helpful if you are trying to sell your home or want to attract more buyers to the neighborhood.

Despite this advantage, there are some disadvantages to having a tandem garage in your home. Here are some of them:

Not Always Easy to Manage

Managing a tandem parking spot can be tricky, especially if you live in an apartment or townhouse with a neighbor. Your neighbor might refuse to share or they might accidentally hog the space. This can make it hard for you to find a space that's available or even get in and out of the garage when you need to.

Not Always Affordable

Depending on your location, tandem parking might be more expensive than the equivalent of a single space. In some cases, you might have to negotiate with your landlord for a discounted rate or ask for a rent reduction in exchange for using the space for storage.

Not Everyone Will Want to Use It

The main downside to a tandem garage is that it can be difficult to park in it. You have to take the car out first before putting it in, and this can be a pain if you're going somewhere for a long period of time or have something in your car that requires a lot of space.

You also have to think about how you will be able to move the cars out of the garage when you need to. This can be an inconvenience for those who have cars that need to be moved out regularly or if you have a family with several cars.
